Field of Study
I am majoring in Marketing, and am persuing the Public and Professional writing certificate. Outside of the classroom, I work as a freelance production assistant and am building my videography skills. I am looking to put the lessons learned in my work experience and skills learned in the classroom togehter somewhere in the advertising industry.
Knowledge, Tools, and Skills
I have a rudamentary understanding of the Adobe suite overall. I am most comfortable with Premiere pro since video is the medium I work in most. My Photoshop skills are basic, but I can color photos and have used it to design basic graphics. In illustrator, I have designed basic text based logos, but haven't gotten very deep into the tools available. I have basically no experience with inDesign. I have my own mirrorless camera with a gimbal and studio lights, and a solid understadning of the fundamentals of composing an interesting image in camera. I also have a mini dv camcorder which I adapted to record to sd card. I think of myself as a competent writer, capable of getting my opinions or desires across in text.
What is good design?
My mom, who studied industrial design at Pratt, told me one of the key tenants officia design is 'form follows function'. Most things we appreciate the design of look clean and interesting, but what makes a design truly good depends on how we interact with it. For instance, the Vanmoot bike which is first in the grid below looks very nice, but the built in battery, motor, and light are the factors that would make owning the bike a benefit. Good design is about both how the product looks and what it can do.
In the Future
After School, I want to do something in Advertising, Marketing, or Communications. This is a wide range of industries, but right now I am developing multiple skills and am considering which one to persue at graduation. I'd love to do something close to the actual production of content, either orchestrating that creation or being physically behind the computer or camera. I eventually would love to have some hand in branding and strategy, but know I would need more hands on experience to actually understand how to go about creating a strategy. For that reason, I would be happy working in B2B marketing or communications first to gain that insight.
